Dallas 1287 Real Time Clock
In computer manufactured in the early 90s the Dallas 1287 chip is used quite often. It is responsible for the system time and can store up to 50 bytes additional info in its RAM. Because of its built in battery it can't lose its content but if the internal battery is empty it has to be replaced.
But this chip that was built in our IBM PS/2 8565 had been running there since 1991. Nearly 13 years later, in 2003, the battery was empty and the computer had no time anymore (and would annoy us at every IPL [boot] with an error message). See Picture 1 for the result.

So we decided not to get a spare one (it would cost quite much anyway) but to fix it. From an old dead motherboard we got on of these chips to open it and to have a look inside. So we discovered there is a way to attach a new battery. (Picture
